Why Is There So Much Bad News?

Central Presbyterian Church • July 9, 2025

Why even our best news disappoints—and the one story that doesn’t.

You don’t have to look hard to find it—bad news is everywhere.

The economy stumbles. Political promises fall flat. Natural disasters roll across the headlines. Global conflict, culture wars, inflation, division… it’s like we’re living in a cycle of crisis.

Even when there's a flicker of good news, it often turns sour. One step forward, two steps back. A new policy, a promising innovation, a peace agreement—only to be followed by more dysfunction, more confusion, more headlines that make you sigh.

And quietly, we wonder:
Why does even good news feel so fragile?
Why do things seem to get worse, not better?
Why do we still struggle with the same old problems… and keep adding new ones?

More Information, Less Trust

In an age of information, we know more than ever. We can livestream events across the globe, analyze data in real time, and fact-check anything in seconds.

But strangely, all this access has led to less trust, not more.
We’ve seen too much: too much spin, too much corruption, too many disappointments from leaders, institutions, and influencers we were told to believe in.

The future was supposed to be bright. Technology would save us. Science would fix us. Progress would unite us.

Instead, many people feel more anxious. More isolated. More disillusioned.
And deep down, we’re left asking: What’s really going to fix all of this? Who can fix this?

A Different Kind of Good News

Maybe you’ve heard the word gospel before—but have no idea what it actually means.

It simply means “good news.”
And not just any good news—
the best news the world has ever heard.

The gospel is the announcement that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, entered our broken world to rescue us. He lived the life we were meant to live. He died the death we deserved. He rose again to defeat sin, death, and everything that’s wrong with the world.

And He did it not for the strong or the sorted-out, but for sinners. For the weary. For those who’ve run out of hope.

This isn’t a religious pep talk. It’s not a political platform. It’s not self-help.
It’s
news—real, historic, life-altering news—about what God has already done.

"The angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.’" —Luke 2:10

Real Hope, in a World That Needs It

If you’re tired of empty promises and exhausted by endless headlines, you’re not alone. This world is broken—but not beyond repair.

There is good news that doesn’t fade, fracture, or fail.

There’s a Savior who doesn’t disappoint.
There’s a joy that isn’t dependent on circumstances.

His name is Jesus. And He invites you to come and find rest for your soul.

You’re invited. We hope to see you soon!
