The Church That Stands the Test of Time

Why the story of the church is older, deeper, and stronger than we think

One reason so many people are returning to church is a growing hunger for roots. We’re tired of living as if history began last Tuesday.

The church didn’t begin fifty years ago—or even a hundred.

The New Testament church began about two thousand years ago, when Jesus Christ rose from the dead and poured out His Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. That’s when the gospel went public, and the message of salvation in Christ began to spread to the ends of the earth.

But the church itself goes back much further than that. From the very beginning—from Genesis 3:15, when God first promised that the offspring of the woman would crush the serpent’s head—God has been gathering a people to Himself. From Abraham to David, from Israel to the apostles, He has always been calling and redeeming His people by grace through faith in His promises. And even that wasn’t the true beginning.

Before creation itself, the church began in the mind and heart of God. Before the world was made, He purposed to save a people for Himself—people who would be with Him and worship Him for all eternity.

And so our eternal God stepped into time and space in the person of Jesus Christ—taking on our humanity, wearing our human flesh.
He lived here perfectly.
He died here.
And he rose —never to die again.
He ascended to the right hand of God the Father, where He rules and reigns over all things, both now and forever.

That’s the story we’re part of at Central Presbyterian Church. We don’t stand alone. We don’t stand by ourselves. We’re part of God’s eternal plan—and you’re invited into it.

Do you know this Jesus? Come find out about Him.
