Jesus Is Better!
We don’t usually struggle to understand that Jesus is better — we struggle to believe it deep down and to live like it’s true.
Hebrews begins with a staggering claim:
God has spoken in many different ways throughout history — but now He has spoken finally and fully in His Son. All of Scripture is moving toward Him, fulfilled in Him, centered on Him. Jesus is not just another prophet, another teacher, another religious figure among many. He is the One to whom everything else was pointing.
And the message of Hebrews 1 is simple and searching:
Jesus Christ is better. Better than anything. Better than everything.
Better than success.
Better than comfort.
Better than reputation.
Better than pleasure.
Better than safety.
Better than whatever you’re tempted to trade Him for.
The original audience of Hebrews knew what it meant to pay a price for following Christ. They lost status, friendships, comfort, and in some cases property. At first they said, He’s worth it. Over time, the cost began to wear them down — and they began to drift.
That’s how drifting usually happens.
Not overnight. Not by one dramatic decision.
Slowly. Quietly. Imperceptibly.
Less time in the Word.
Less prayer.
Less worship.
More distraction.
More compromise.
More “later, not today.”
Hebrews shows us the antidote to drifting — not guilt, not human effort, but a fresh look at Christ Himself.
Jesus is:
- the heir of all things
- the One through whom the world was made
- the radiance of the glory of God
- the exact imprint of God’s nature
- the One who upholds the universe by His word
- the One who made purification for sins
- the One seated in triumph and authority
And because He sits, the work is finished. No more sacrifices. No more earning. No more trying to be “enough.” The decisive payment for sin has been offered — by Him, for us.
So the question Hebrews presses into the heart is not:
“Are you religious?”
“Do you believe in God?”
“Do you attend church?”
The real question is:
Is Jesus enough for you?
Not theoretically.
Not abstractly.
Not merely doctrinally.
Enough to hold onto when the world shakes.
Enough to lose things for.
Enough to turn away from sin for.
Enough to trust in when your heart condemns you.
Enough when the future is uncertain.
He is the One who gets you safely home.
He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him.
So as you look back at this past year and forward to the year ahead:
- some things went beautifully
- some things broke your heart
- some things you never saw coming
But Jesus hasn’t changed.
He still reigns.
He still sustains all things by His powerful word.
He is still better.
Draw near to Him.
Hold fast to Him.
Fix your eyes on Him.
And rest in this truth:
Christ is enough — and He will not let you go.
